In its second year, the Dilla Fest aims to continue honoring the legacy of the the man, J Dilla, that was by some considered to be one of the most influential hop-hop artists during his lifetime.
J Dilla, also know by his given name James Dewitt Yancey and alternative stage name Jay Dee, was a record producer and rapper that came to be well known in the Detroit underground hip hop scene during the the mid 90s. He was born into a musical family. His mother, Maureen “Ma Dukes” Yancey, was a former opera singer and his father, Beverly Dewitt Yancey, was a jazz bassist.
Early in his career, James formed the music trio known as Slum Village and they released a debut album Fantastic Vol 1 and later Fantastic Vol. 2. He also worked on singles and remixes with various other artists including 2022 Dilla Fest headlining group ,The Pharycyde. Later in the '90s and into the early 2000s, he also was part of the influential music collective, the Soulquarians. Notable members of the Soulquarians included Amir "Questlove" Thompson, D'Angelo, recent JABM Headliner Erykah Badu, Q-Tip, Mos Def, Common and 2022 Dillafest headliner Talib Kweli.
On February 10, 2006, three days after his 32nd birthday and the release of his last studio album, Donuts, J. Dilla passed away after battling a rare blood disease and lupus. The following May, his mother, "Ma Dukes", announced the formation of the J. Dilla Foundation (later renamed the James Dewitt Yancey Foundation). It was Dilla's wish to have his legacy to help others, in particular, kids who were musically gifted but had little hope due to poverty. $1 of every ticket sold to Dilla Fest 2022 will go to funding Dilla's legacy via the foundation.
